[더 타임즈] 산체스는 과르디올라의 맨시티에 녹아들 수 있었을까?

알렉시스 산체스의 이적이 성사되지 않았던 쪽이 최선이었을지도 모른다.

마침내 내일(일요일, 이하 현지 시간), 알렉시스 산체스가 에티하드 스타디움의 잔디를 밟는다. 

틀림없이, 산체스의 머릿속은 이런저런 생각으로 가득할 터이다. 

이내 산체스는 아마 벌어졌을지도 모를 일에 대해 생각하기 시작할 것이다.

이적 시장 마감일에 상황이 다른 방향으로 전개되었더라면, 산체스는 터널 클럽 라운지를 지나쳐 맨체스터 시티 팬들과 하이파이브를 주고받고 있었을 터였다. 

지금처럼, 경기장 외부와 원정 팀의 드레싱 룸을 직접 연결하는 통로를 거쳐 콜린 벨 스탠드로 들어오는 대신 말이다. 

아무래도 전자보다는 후자 쪽에 대한 대접의 화려함이 훨씬 떨어지지 않겠는가.

8월 31일이 끝나가던 마지막 몇 시간 동안, 맨시티 측과 아스날 측은 일면 품위가 없어 보였던 설전을 벌였다. 

산체스의 이적이 성사되지 않았던 책임을 서로에게 미루었던 것이다.

산체스의 이적을 두고 6,000만 파운드에 합의했지만 (우선 5,500만 파운드 지급, 추가 금액으로 500만 파운드 지급) 끝내 성사되지 못했다. 

무슨 이유에서였을까? 이는 맨시티와 아스날 중 어느 쪽의 이야기를 믿는가에 달려 있다.

아스날 측에 따르면, 이적 시장 마감을 겨우 24시간 남짓 앞둔 상황까지도 맨시티가 산체스에 대한 영입 의사를 밝히지 않았다고 한다. 

아스날로서는 산체스를 대체할 공격수로서 고려하고 있던 모나코의 토마 르마를 영입할 시간이 충분하지 않았다는 것이다. 

그러나 맨시티 측은, 산체스가 펩 과르디올라와의 재회를 바라고 있다는 사실을 아스날 측도 여름 내내 인지하고 있었다고 한다. 

산체스는 컨페더레이션스 컵에서 복귀한 7월에 이미 아르센 벵거와의 면담을 통해 아스날을 떠나고 싶다는 의사를 밝혔으나, 산체스가 프리미어리그 내 다른 팀으로 이적하는 것을 벵거가 반기지 않았다는 이야기다.

이적 시장 마감일에는 양 구단의 CEO인 이반 가지디스와 페란 소리아노를 비롯한 수뇌부 인사 사이에서 거친 언사가 오갔다. 

한 맨시티 구단 관계자는 아스날의 행동을 두고 “엉망”이라고 표현하기도 했다.

과르디올라의 영입 대상 1순위 중 산체스는 없었다. 

벤자민 멘디, 카일 워커, 베르나르두 실바, 에데르송, 다닐루가 우선 순위에 들어 있었기 때문이었다. 

그러나 산체스는 맨시티행을 간절히 원했고, 과르디올라 역시 자신이 잘 아는 선수이자 지난 시즌에 30득점을 기록한 선수를 단순히 무시할 수만은 없었다. 

그러나 이적 시장 마감 당일에 펼쳐졌던 파라과이와의 월드컵 지역 예선 경기에 앞서, 산체스는 머리를 감싸 쥐며 주저앉았다. 

이적이 성사되지 않았다는 소식을 들었기 때문이었다. 

잉글랜드에 복귀한 뒤에는 르마가 리버풀이나 바르셀로나 이적을 희망했기 때문에 아스날의 제의를 거절했다는 이야기가 들려왔다. 

맨시티는 아스날이 산체스의 이적 조건으로 라힘 스털링을 요구했다고도 주장했다. 

이 일련의 줄거리에 재밋거리를 한 가지 더하자면, 스털링의 주변에서는 아스날행의 가능성을 배제하지 말라는 조언을 했다고 한다.

그 모든 언쟁의 한가운데에서, 산체스는 아스날에 남았다. 

당시에는 맨시티의 패배인 듯 보였지만, 이제는 다행스러운 결과로 밝혀졌다.

산체스는 분명히 환상적인 선수이지만, 현재의 맨시티에 녹아들 수 있었을까? 

맨시티의 현재 경기력을 고려하면, 그리고 산체스의 현재 상태를 고려하면, 답은 ‘그렇지 않다’이다. 

세르히오 아구에로, 르로이 사네, 가브리에우 제주스와 라힘 스털링으로 이루어진 과르디올라의 주요 공격진이 리그에서 기록한 골은 총 26골이다.

반면 산체스의 리그 득점 기록은 파비안 델프의 기록과 같다 (1골).

모든 대회를 통틀어 산체스는 단 2골만을 기록하고 있다. 

이번 시즌 들어 존 스톤스, 니콜라스 오타멘디, 페르난지뉴를 포함해 맨시티 선수 가운데 7명이 전직 바르셀로나 공격수와 같은 수의 득점을, 혹은 더 많은 수의 득점을 기록했다. 

물론, 공을 공급하는 능력 측면에서 맨시티가 아스날보다 탁월한 자원을 보유하고 있다는 것은 사실이다. 

하지만 이번 시즌 산체스는 기회를 잡았을 때에도 사네, 스털링, 아구에로, 제주스, 베르나르두 실바만큼 냉정하게 마무리하는 모습을 보이지 못했다. 

산체스의 측근에 따르면, 산체스가 아스날과 계약을 연장할 가능성은 없다. 

산체스의 계약은 2018년 6월 30일에 만료된다. 

그러나 어제(금요일), 과르디올라는 세 차례에 걸쳐 산체스에 대한 질문을 쳐냈다. 

“제가 산체스에 대해 언급하는 것은 옳지 못합니다. 산체스는 아스날 선수입니다.”

과르디올라는 “다음 시즌에는 팀에 약간의 변화를 주고 싶다”고 전했다. 

이는 1월에 열릴 겨울 이적 시장에서는 산체스의 영입을 추진하지 않을 것임을 시사한다. 

과르디올라의 뜻은 맨시티 수뇌부 및 벵거의 의견과도 일치한다. 

벵거는 “산체스가 (1월에) 떠나지는 않을 것이라고 생각한다”고 밝혔다.

맨시티가 산체스를 영입하기 위해 다음 여름 이적 시장까지 기다릴 의사가 더 크다는 것을 이해하기는 쉬운 일이다.

우선, 6개월 뒤면 공짜로 영입할 수 있을 선수에게 3,000만 파운드를 투자할 이유가 어디에 있겠는가? 

하지만 그보다 더 중요한 이유는 따로 있다. 

어쩌면 전세계에서 세 손가락 안에 꼽혀야만 할 강력한 공격진을 굳이 흐트러트릴 이유가 무엇이겠는가?

우연이었든 계획적이었든, 산체스 영입이 실패로 돌아간 이후 맨시티의 경기력이 좋아졌다. 

11경기에 출전해 10골을 터뜨렸고 이제는 맨시티 역사상 가장 많은 골을 기록한 선수로 등극한 아구에로는 골 결정력 측면에서 훨씬 더 좋은 모습을 보여주고 있다. 

사네는 이미 지난 시즌 동안 기록한 9골보다 1골 부족한 8골을 기록하고 있고, 제주스는 15경기에 출전해 8골을 기록하고 있다. 

하지만, 그 누구보다도 가장 눈부시게 성장한 선수는 아마 스털링이라고 할 수 있다. 

이번 시즌이 끝나면 월드컵이 기다리고 있기 때문에 스털링으로서는 매주 경기에 나설 필요성을 느끼고 있을 것이다. 

스털링은 지난 시즌에 겨우 10골밖에 기록하지 못하며 과르디올라의 기대를 저버렸는데, 이번 시즌에는 14경기만에 이미 10골을 달성했다. 

과르디올라도 “골문 앞에서 스털링의 실력이 좋아지고 있다는 것은 사실”이라고 밝혔다.

맨시티 선수들이 앞으로도 지금처럼만 해준다면, 과르디올라로서는 1월에 산체스에게 굳이 모험을 할 이유가 없는 것이다.

AS Alexis Sanchez arrives at the Etihad Stadium tomorrow (Sunday), his imagination will no doubt wander and he will start to think what might have been.

Had things gone differently on transfer deadline day, he would be walking through the Tunnel Club lounges, high-fiving the Manchester City fans, rather than entering the Colin Bell Stand through the far less glamorous service tunnel that links the outside of the stadium to the away dressing room.

In the final hours of August 31, City and Arsenal officials became embroiled in an undignified spat as they blamed each other for the collapse of Sanchez's transfer.

A pounds 60 million fee had been agreed - pounds 55 million up front, with another pounds 5 million in add-ons - but the deal fell through. Why? Well, that depends on whose version of events you believe.

Arsenal said City did not bid for Sanchez until just over 24 hours before the window shut, leaving them without enough time to sign Thomas Lemar, the Monaco forward, as a replacement. City said that Arsenal had known all summer that Sanchez wanted a reunion with Pep Guardiola. Sanchez told Arsene Wenger at a meeting that he wanted to leave when he came back from the Confederations Cup in July, but the Arsenal manager was reluctant to let the forward join another English club.

On deadline day, strong words were exchanged between Ivan Gazidis and Ferran Soriano, the chief executives, and other senior figures chipped in too. One City official described Arsenal's conduct as "shambolic".

Sanchez was not one of the primary targets on Guardiola's shopping list. Those places were taken by Benjamin Mendy, Kyle Walker, Bernardo Silva, Ederson and Danilo, but Sanchez was desperate to sign for City and Guardiola could not turn his nose up at a player he knew well and who had scored 30 goals last season.

Sanchez sat with his head in his hands before Chile's World Cup qualifier against Paraguay on deadline day as he learnt that the deal was off. Back in England, there were claims that Lemar turned down Arsenal as he wanted to go to Liverpool or Barcelona. City claimed that Arsenal wanted Raheem Sterling as part of the deal. To add intrigue to the plot, Sterling's advisers refused to rule out a move to Arsenal.

But amid all the bickering and counterclaims, Sanchez stayed. The outcome was seen as a defeat for City, but it turned out to be a blessing.

Sanchez is a truly wonderful player, but would he get into this City team? Based on their present form, and that of their former target, the answer is no.

Sergio Aguero, Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling, Guardiola's primary forwards, have 26 league goals between them.

Sanchez's goal tally in the league is equal to that of Fabian Delph (one).

The Chilean has scored two goals in all competitions. Seven City players, including John Stones, Nicolas Otamendi and Fernandinho, have an equal or better record in front of goal than the former Barcelona forward this season. Yes, the supply lines at City are better, but when presented with an opportunity, Sanchez has not been as clinical as Sane, Sterling, Aguero, Jesus, or Bernardo Silva this season.

Sources close to Sanchez insist that there is no chance of him extending his Arsenal contract, which expires on June 30. Guardiola batted away three questions about Sanchez yesterday (Friday). "It would not be correct for me to speak about Alexis. He's an Arsenal player," the City head coach said.

Guardiola said he wants to "shake the team a little next season," implying there will be no January bid for Sanchez. That is a view shared by his superiors at City, and Wenger too. "I don't think he will go [in January]," the Frenchman said.

It is easy to see why City are more intent on waiting until the summer to sign Sanchez. First, why pay pounds 30 million for a player they could get on a free six months later? But more importantly, why disturb a forward line that should perhaps be considered as one of the top three in the world?

Whether by accident or design, City's form has improved since they failed to sign Sanchez. Aguero, who has ten goals in 11 and is now the club's top scorer, has been far more clinical than last season. Sane is one goal short of last year's tally of nine. Jesus has eight goals in 15 appearances, but perhaps the biggest improvement has come from Sterling. He, like Aguero, would have considered his future at City had Sanchez signed. This is a World Cup year and he feels he needs to play every week. Guardiola felt let down by Sterling's return of ten goals last season. This term he has matched that tally after 14 matches. "It's true that in front of goal he's improving," Guardiola said.

He has no reason to take a risk on Sanchez in January if his own crop of forwards keep playing the way that they are.
